Title: Multivariate statistical analysis of experimental data
Abstract: Ecological research involves a wide range of data resulting from experiments. An important step in this kind of research is the interpretation of the experimental data. To get the best impression, it is necessary to carry out an adequate statistical analysis. In the paper, examples of possible errors that occur during sampling, preparation of plant and soil samples for analysis, as well as possible errors that may arise when applying statistical analysis will be described. Sampling is one of the most important stages of any biogeochemical research. During collection of samples various factors can affect the quality of the experimental results; it is often impossible to take them all into account. For example, the concentrations of many elements in different plant species growing under the same conditions in one small area can vary greatly. This may be due to the distinctive characteristics of each plant species, primarily the genetic characteristics of a particular plant. In addition, element concentrations in plants and in the rhizosphere soil may change over time. These changes are quite natural. They are caused by circadian rhythms inherent in all living organisms. Application of different multivariate statistical methods will be demonstrated using our recent experimental data. This will include analysis of variance to assess statistically significant differences between groups of samples, correlation analysis, principal component analysis, and cluster analysis. These methods will be applied to the original datasets to identify variables that may have the most significant impact on the experimental results.
