Title: ENDOCRINE DISRUPTORS: INVESTIGATION OF THE EFFECTS ON THE IMMUNE AND NERVOUS SYSTEMS (EDoNIS)
Abstract:
There is growing interest in the possible health threat posed by endocrine disruptors (ED), which are substances in our environment, food, and consumer products. Evidence is accumulating on the existence of multidirectional interactions among immune, nervous and endocrine systems. The endocrine system is critically important for immune and nervous system formation and functions, and exogenous agents that disrupt the ability of endocrine system to signal the immune or the nervous system can not only alter the systems themselves but can subsequently be detrimental for the organism. This is a relatively new area of research, because most of the studies on ED primarily focused on reproductive and development toxicity. Therefore, investigations are needed to demonstrate the impact of ED exposures outside of the reproductive axis, and in particular on the immune and nervous system to better understand whether they can be compromised or dysregulated with a subsequent loss, for example, of an effective tumor immunosurveillance network, increased incidence of autoimmune disorders, or the development of neurodegenerative processes. Current testing tools do not appropriately identify all possible effects related to endocrine-mediated pathways and health outcomes, in which ED may be implicated, i.e. immunotoxicity, neurotoxicity and non-genotoxic carcinogenicity. With this project, we aim to develop new and improved approaches to identify and characterize the effects of ED on immune and nervous systems, to provide novel insights into the toxicity of ED, and sensitive, specific, quantitative, efficient screening strategies using alternative test methods to be implemented in current regulations that can serve as the scientific basis for decision making to protect human health.
